Nollywood actress, Eucharia Anunobi has lost her only son, Raymond to sickle cell anemia.

According to multiple sources, the 15-year-old gave up the ghost on Tuesday morning, August 22.

Raymond who she had with her ex-husband, Charles Ekwu, in 2002, has been with Sickle Cell Anemia from birth.

This Is Why Eucharia Anunobi Has Blasted General Overseers Of Churches In Nigeria

She had recently revealed that she regretted having the son out of wedlock;

"It was not a deliberate choice that I have made. It came by chance, it came by mistake. God does not kill His children who have made mistakes. He would rather sustain them and tell them that He is the owner of all things. The Lord has been sustaining me as a single parent. I don’t think about it, all I know is, ‘God, you are the one that created me and the child that you gave to me’. So whatever that is needed of me, it was a wrong choice that I made," she said.

Telecommunications operators have lamented diminishing revenue caused by the operations of Over-the-Top Platforms (OTT).

The Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo disclosed the position of the group at the weekend in Lagos.

He listed the platforms as Skype, Whatsapp, Wechat, Facebook, Viber and IMO.

Quoting an independent analyst and consultancy firm, OVUM, he said customers’ growing adoption of OTT, instead of the traditional telecoms services, was impacting negatively on them.

According to him, OTT operations have created a global revenue loss of $386 billion for the telecoms operators from 2012 to 2018, adding that they were also endangering their network development.

He said the OTT platforms utilise traditional Mobile Network Operator (MNO) infrastructure to drive huge advertising revenues.

Adebayo said the challenges posed by the OTTs were not limited to Nigeria alone, as operators globally were also losing billions of dollars to them yearly.

The Guardian learnt that in Nigeria, OTT’s operations had slashed the revenues of telecoms players by nine per cent.

Meanwhile, the NCC Executive Commissioner, Stakeholders Management, Sunday Dare has asked the operators to look inward and be innovative, rather than lamenting.

"Operators need to be more innovative and stop complaining. We understand the challenges, but the NCC does not regulate technology," he said.

Dare also linked the drop in active subscriptions in Nigeria by 10 million in the first half of the year, to the consolidation of technology.

He said: "People are dropping their multiple SIM cards and phones because they can now do so many things using one phone. For instance, if there is no credit on a phone, one could easily make free calls using Whatsapp and the rest. So, it is high time for the telecoms operators to do something innovative."

He stressed that the co-operative model being developed by operators may necessitate special data bundles.

"We support innovative solutions by operators to minimise impact of disruptive platforms in the best interests of consumers and industry sustainability.

"Security issues need to be addressed. Due to Lawful Interception (LI) reasons, OTT players would not open up their services and that poses a huge security risk," he said.

Abeokuta Paradise Nature Park In Jamaica

Abeokuta Paradise Nature Park(pronounced A-be-o-ku-ta*) is located a few yards off the Dean’s Valley Road in Westmoreland. The centerpiece of this rustic eco-tourism destination is an almost Olympic-sized pool which is fed by water that is channeled via an aqueduct from the nearby Sweet River.

Abeokuta Paradise Nature Park took its name from the community of Abeokuta, which in turn got its name from the city in southwest Nigeria. When the Yorubas, who came to Jamaica as indentured workers, arrived in this part of Westmoreland, they thought it looked so much like the Abeokuta they had left behind that they gave it the same name. Abeokuta is part of the old Dean’s Valley Water Works Estate, a sugar plantation that at one time covered 2,200 acres.

Abeokuta’s pool

The estate changed hands many times and eventually became known as Dean’s Valley, which is also the name of the community. The adjoining community took the name Water Works.

I grew up not far from the Dean’s Valley / Water Works area and knew of ‘Bekuta,’ as everyone calls it, but had no idea then of its significance. Later, I would hear that Dr. Olive Lewin, O.D., cultural anthropologist and musicologist, now deceased, had found and recorded the music of people there who spoke an African language. I was intrigued that anyone in Jamaica had preserved their native language and wanted to know more. I didn’t know then that Africans had come to the island as indentured workers after the abolition of slavery.

One night as my mom and I watched a documentary that was based on Laura Tanna’s book, Jamaican Folktales and Oral Histories, she screamed and pointed to the screen. Tanna had interviewed several residents of Abeokuta, and recorded their stories. My mom had recognized one of the interviewees whose name I’ve now forgotten but who I’m sure has passed on.

Abeokuta Finds New Owners

In 1980, part of Dean’s Valley, which included Abeokuta, was sold and two years later passed by descent to Owen Banhan, one of the new owner’s sons.

"Daddy" Banhan

According to Owen, known as Daddy, it took several months for him to clear the almost 15-acre property of thick brush. Once cleared, he and his wife made a surprising discovery — the ruins of the 18th century Dean’s Valley Great House, the pool and aqueduct.

Seeing how the nearby Roaring River Park had been transformed into an eco-tourism spot, the Banhans set out to do the same at the place they christened Abeokuta Paradise Nature Park.

Taking a dip

The Abeokuta Paradise Nature Park was opened officially in January, 2003 by Florentina Adenike Ukonga, who was then the high commissioner of Nigeria to Jamaica.

It was after reading about the opening that I visited Abeokuta and met Daddy and his family. I’ve been back several times, the latest last weekend.

On a clear day, you can see Negril from here

Much has changed as Daddy continues to prepare the property to accommodate the increasing number of visitors and locals who come to enjoy this peaceful oasis with sweeping views of Westmoreland. On a clear day, you could see as far as Negril, which is about 26 miles away.

Aqueduct leading to Sweet River

Abeokuta Paradise Nature Park is garden of ginger lilies, ferns, taro plants, croton, palms, thickets of bamboo, etc. Nature lovers can follow the aqueduct to the source of the river, a leisurely 15 minute walk away. It is from here that they can view the rock that reminded the Yorubas of Olumo Rock, which had provided their ancestors refuge at the other Abeokuta.

Fish pedicure anyone?

For those who can’t or don’t want to swim, the pool offers another option: a fish pedicure. Dip your feet into the water — it’s a bit cool — and an inch-long carp, known as the doctor fish, will begin to feed on the dead skin on your feet. It tickles at first and the fish disperse at the slightest movement, but if you sit still long enough, you’ll enjoy a temporary exfoliating treatment.

Fish pedicure

Abeokuta Paradise Nature Park is open daily from 9 - 6 p.m. It’ll cost you $5 to enter, $4 for a guided nature walk. If you’d like to stay for lunch, that will be another $8, $10 if you prefer to have fish. Prices are in US dollars.

* Nigerian author, Wole Soyinka who was born in Abeokuta, Nigeria, visited Abeokuta, Westmoreland in the 1990s. I remember seeing a video of him on television pronouncing the name, which is how I call it now. I searched online but couldn’t find the clip.

The Abeokuta Private Nature Park is a Heritage, Health and Eco-Tourist Attraction located in Dean’s Valley Westmoreland Jamaica, commissioned on the 5th of January 2003 by the Nigerian High Commissioner, Her Excellency Florentina Ukonga. The 13 acres natural park is a sight to behold, in beauty and with a hill that oversees an original "plantation farm" that was once home to black slaves some hundred’s of years ago.

At the Abeokuta park is one of the oldest swimming pool in Jamacica, the pool which goes back to over 300 years ago, with near Olympic dimensions being 71ft long and 47ft wide ranging from 4 to 10 feet in depth.
The relationship between the Abeokuta Nature Park and Abeokuta in Ogun State (Nigeria) was a direct link over 300 years ago when the first slaves that were taken to the Parish of Westmoreland were brought to this Plantation from Abeokuta, Nigeria. The Park also has its own "Olumo Rock", a almost typical size to the one here in Nigeria.

A nature park that stands on its own, in beauty, size and a pleasure to the eyes. Its natural therapeutic value has been why thousands of people all around the world always go to the resort. Among famous Nigerians who have been to the park include, Former Nigeria President,Olusegun Obasanjoand Prof.Wole Soyinka.

The town of Abeokuta, Nigeria is directly linked to Abeokuta, Jamaica for over three hundred years. This occurred when the first slaves that were taken to the Parish of Westmoreland were brought to this Plantation from Abeokuta, Nigeria. The Park itself occupies 13 acres of land on a hill that was the original Plantation Yard. The remains of the Great House still stand magnificently fashioned from pure cut 2' thick stone. On the property is the oldest swimming pool in Jamaica which goes back three hundred years, with near Olympic dimensions being 71ft long and 47ft wide ranging from 4 to 10 feet in depth. There is a rope swing too!

Mineral Water is supplied to this historic pool and a "Kiddie Pool" via an aqueduct ¼ mile long. Beginning at the riverhead, water flows constantly and ends in two separate waterfalls. The therapeutic value of the Mineral Water has been highly touted in the relief of Arthritis as well as muscle or bone problems due to the concentration of Iron, Calcium, Chloride, Magnesium and several other natural minerals.

The view from Abeokuta Private Nature Park is quite spectacular and breathtaking due to the "bird's eye" altitude encompassing the distant ocean, spreading fields of sugar cane.

I am with this publication now fulfilling my promise.

The story of BEKUTA as told by Bros Kongi is contained in his book "YOU MUST SET FOURTH AT DAWN - MEMOIRS" published by BOOKCRAFT.

As a lawyer, I know the legal implications of the following: "All rights reserved including the right of reproduction in whole or in part, in any form".

What I am doing from today is in total breach of the above. I know however that the Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka a.k.a. "Bros Kongi" will not jail me for this. And neither will he carpet the Nigerian Tribune. It is ever on Bros Kongi’s mind that the Nigerian Tribune was founded by the sage Papa Obafemi Awolowo in 1949. It is equally instructive that Professor Wole Soyinka had the following to say on Papa Obafemi Awolowo on page 10 of "YOU MUST SET FOURTH AT DAWN" while talking on his friend, the late Professor Ojetunji Aboyade:-

"Oje had been my Vice-Chancellor at the University of Ife - later renamed Obafemi Awolowo University after the death of that politician and sage, Obafemi Awolowo, a first generation nationalist of Yoruba stock who never lost his political fire until his death in 1987".

With the above settled, Nigerians will like the story Wole Soyinka has told about BEKUTA in his book. The Wole Soyinka book is a book that contains all that must be said about Nigeria since 1914. Those who are preparing a centenary celebration of the amalgamation of Nigeria must read this book. It is a book of history. It is a documentation that will make Nigerians know the events of their existence as citizens of the country called Nigeria. YOU MUST SET FOURTH AT DAWN - MEMOIRS of Wole Soyinka is certainly a must read for all Nigerians. I am about reading it again for a fourth time.

We will serialize the BEKUTA story on this page and except for the interlude next week to write about Papa Obafemi Awolowo’s post humous birthday, we will continue with the serialization until we finish with the BEKUTA story in March. I wish you all a happy reading:-

BEKUTA AS TOLD BY WOLE SOYINKA
"In 1990 - in my mental calendar, the Year of Mandela’s Release - when he made Jamaica one of his first stopping points for his reunion with the living world, I made a startling discovery on that same island. If Mandela was retrieving the space of freedom on a global scale, I was also discovering a micro-world that was founded in freedom. Thus did I embark on a pilgrimage that would begin as sentimental, and evolve into a morbid attachment.

The timing of my presence in Kingston, Jamaica, with Mandela’s - even though we never did meet on that soil - imbued my discovery with an indefinable sense of augury. But then, let it be recalled that, like a large portion of the world, I had carried the Calvary of Nelson Mandela and the struggle against Apartheid South Africa on my shoulders for longer than its continental replacement, the horror of an Abacharised Nigerian nation. Apart from participating in the mandatory FREE MANDELA marches, disinvestment campaigns, lecture sessions, a UN anti-sanction-busting commission, etc. etc, I had presented an early student play at the London Royal Court Theatre - the Invention - on the insanities of the Apartheid system. Decades after that production, I titled a collection of my poems Mandela’s Earth and Other Poems and, it seemed the most appropriate gesture, as I prepared for Stockholm in 1986, to dedicate my Nobel acceptance speech to him. (That was the speech in which, to my eternal chagrin, I listed Montesquieu among the contributors to European racist thinking - may the shade of Montesquieu find it in his ancestral heart to forgive that libel!).

To find myself again in Kingston on a lecture engagement in 1990, for the first time in nearly fifteen years, just as the entire city was emptying itself out for Mandela, was already more than sufficient. It was a symbolic gift that I regarded as personal, not shared with the millions of ecstatic hordes that had laboured for, and now celebrated his freedom. To discover a portion of my own homeland in that far-off place at the same time - now, that was a miracle that could only be wrought by a Mandelan avatar!

For it was only on this visit, my second ever to that island, that I was made aware of a slave settlement called Bekuta, a name that immediately resonated in my head as none other than the name of my hometown, Abeokuta. This centuries-wide reunion with my own history sent a tingle down my vertebrae - an encounter with descendants from my own hometown, Abeokuta, on a far-flung Caribbean island, in the hills of a once slave settlement called Jamaica?

The group of slave descendants who founded the settlement, in flight from the lowland plantations, had sought out a hilly terrain that would prove near impenetrable for their pursuing owners, but one that would also remind them of home. They found it in the county of Westmoreland and settled among its rockhills, naming it Abeokuta. Ade Adefuye, the Nigerian High Commissioner in the West Indies had already become acquainted with this history and could not wait to arrange a visit. What was only an academic, though exciting, discovery for him and others was, in my case, a most affecting experience. I found it strange indeed that, during my first visit to Jamaica in 1976, for CARIFESTA - the Caribbean Festival of the Arts - no one had thought to mention the existence of this settlement, or propose that we pay it a visit!

A famous Nigerian, now also deceased, had preceded me on this voyage of a private discovery, I was informed. This was Fela Sowande, a composer, but a totally different spirit from his younger and more famous namesake, the ‘Afro-beat King’ and iconoclast, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Sowande had been completely overwhelmed - he broke down in tears. This older cousin would exact his emotional revenge on me some years later, unintentionally, for it was his symphony - Obangiji, based on melodies from our common birthplace - which, unexpectedly swarming out of violin and cello stings of the Swedish orchestra on the Stockholm stage, as I moved forward to receive the Nobel award - nearly succeeded in making me a victim of the shamelessness of tear ducts. It was a brief, but tense struggle! The rockhills of origin stood me in good stead but, it could have gone the other way. (The horror of it - the immediately pressed, ribboned and sashed master of ceremonies, the Swedish Prime Consort himself, compelled to lend me his handkerchief!) Really, the Stockholm ceremonials should not spring such surprises on middle-aged susceptibilities!

As the island slowly recovered from the hangover of Mandela’s visit, I could not wait to answer the call of Bekuta. There, I encountered one of my yet living ancestors, the oldest inhabitant of the settlement, frail, as one would expect a being of over a hundred years to be. Now, let no one dare tell me I do not know an Egba face when I see one! The parchment tautness of her face, the unmistakable features of the Egba death-mask, captured so immutably in Demas Nwoko’s painting Ogboni, attested her origins distinctly against any skeptical voices. Not much motion was left in her body, else her body rhythm, I was certain, would have reinforced what her face pronounced. As she became bedridden, she ordered her bed moved to the window that overlooked the rockhills. Now, all she sought was that her eyes would open and close on those rocks, dawn and dusk, until her final moment.

She was the sole survivor of the original settlers. Her voice was still remarkably strong. Did I imagine the unmistakable Egba twang in her Jamaican patois? Of course I did, but what a conceit to let linger in the resounding chambers of one’s head! Oh yes, the real name is A-be-o-ku-ta - never did music sound so tanned, so ancestral in authority - but it gradually became corrupted to Bekuta. I tell them all the time - the name is A-be-o-ku-ta, but how many of them can remember that! They don’t even remember what it means, not less I remind them. I was a child when we came here. When our people dance for you and cook you fufu, ewedu, jogi and other foods from home, no one come tell you that we descendants of slaves from A-be-o-ku-ta. But yes, much has been lost. The government help a little, they come here sometimes, bring visitors, and the local council preserve our history by staging shows every year. We observe the seasons of the gods…. "Sango, Obatala, Ogun"…we used to have a babalawo, but I don’t think anyone remember how to read Ifa anymore… some of the children go away and never return…. In fact, the best dancers are the older ones, they the ones who keep our traditions alive. They teach their children, but the children not very interested. They only do these things when there are important visitors, so I don’t know what going happen when the older ones die off".

The town of Abeokuta, Nigeria is directly linked to Abeokuta, Jamaica for over three hundred years. This occurred when the first slaves that were taken to the Parish of Westmoreland were brought to this Plantation from Abeokuta, Nigeria.

Abeokuta is part of the old Dean’s Valley W

I live in Canada, so this is a round journey, and very ironically I'm expecting a child any day and her father is Yoruba.

Anyways, my mother's family is from Westmoreland , Sweet River to be exact. My grandmother said she was born in maylersfield, but grew up in sweet river and knows bekuta and dean's valley very well. My mother's father family is from that place as well.

Good luck with your pregnancy and yea i believed we are all connected to each other somehow. Jamaica was not known by most people to have any cultural link with yoruba compare to cuba and brazil so it was a really surprice when i found the article.

My grand father used to talk of relatives that went to Brazil as indentured servants, and they used to go back and forth. Nigerians have been traveling before and after slavery as free people. Not every Nigerian left Nigeria as slaves.

Even a friend's father talked about Yoruba's that went to the Caribbean as workers centuries ago. This was at least 8yrs ago. And he didn't mention Jamaica.

Circumcision is the traditional cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia or a partial injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons (WHO, UNICEF and UNFPA 1997). This procedure is usually carried out by a primitive circumciser days after birth to puberty. The core reason for this exercise, is deeply based in the effort to curb sexual desires, and conceptions about purity, modesty and beauty. Older women who see it as a form of honour, are scared that if their daughters are not circumcised, it would expose them to social rejections.
According to WHO, the procedure is generally tied to beliefs about acceptable sexual behaviour, meant to deter promiscuity and strip women of erotic desire or sexual enjoyment.
There are side effects health-wise depending on the method that is adopted. These could include infections, difficulty in urinating and passing of menstrual flow, chronic pain, the development of cysts, infertility, complications during childbirth, shock or even death. It can be a suppressed torture throughout the victim’s life. However, there are no known health gains.
Due to the taboo nature of lady’s sexuality, issues like this is most time ignored or overlooked. Women circumcision also referred to as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), is a common practice in most African countries and few others outside the continent. Nigeria is not an exception as about one quarter of the ladies are circumcised. Though it has been banned in Nigeria since May 15th, 2015, efforts are still being made to create awareness about it and to help promote and build self esteem among victims.
Most circumcised women are strongly of the belief, that they cannot obtain any form of sexual pleasures and excitement. However, in some infibulated women, erectile structures that are responsible for achieving orgasm, have been tampered with. A woman has the moral justification to sexual health and also experience sexual pleasures for full psychological well being. Hence, a female mutilated person with sexual dysfunctions, are very free to seek cure by going for proper sexual therapy, and also get their men educated about female anatomy and sexual pleasures.
If a circumcised woman is not enjoying sex, it can be as a result of the following;
a) She is not excited enough, so spend quality time on foreplay.
b) There is tendency for her to be tense as such she does not contract the muscles around the vagina- practice relaxation exercise, exerts pressure and pretend you want to pee, feel how the vagina opens.
c) Lastly, the left over hymen can cause pain. So try to locate where the pain is, in order to manage it in the best way possible.
On a more lighter note, the best way to increase sexual pleasures for circumcised women is for them to know their bodies. They should take time to touch their bodies and discover other areas where they be easily aroused when touched and pass the information to their spouses.

Self touching can be carried out by the use of one’s fingers, or any sex toys. This act can increase greater sexual satisfaction, more sexual fantasies and greater ease in reaching sexual arousal and orgasm.

The simple truth is that, ladies who took their time to study as it partakes to the sex organs and how it functions, find it easier to achieve sexual connection with their spouses. In the same vein, a man who is well informed about the female body, will be able to figure out how to please his lady.

Studies have shown that, the above mechanism is a positive component in the structuring of female sexuality. Most women who have gone through circumcision, usually, complain of pain during mating, for some others, they find corpulation tiresome and unpleasant. A 2007 report by Sexual Medicine suggests that in many women who have been cut, some of the fundamental structures needed for orgasm remain intact and that most women in the study, reported being able to achieve orgasm as well as that of arousal and sexual satisfaction. It is all about the mindset. Most times, this can involve the women talking to their spouses about what works and what does not, in other words, the women should know their bodies, let there be more understanding and try to communicate more with your partner.

Politicians are Seldom known to think of tomorrow. It is usually a statement i will do so, however through a curious interplay of fate and favour, a glimmer of events indicating that all hope may not be lost in the hunger and thirst for those with the right quality who can break new grounds and open up edifying frontiers in our development space.

In our political climate, it is not usually a tea party to locate those with uncommon qualities who can combine the visionary statements with the politicians pedestrians footsteps.

This disposition perhaps accounts for the conclusion by many that at the root of the state woes are the problems of leadership yet, it will be uncharitable to refuse to discern beyond this bleak prism of somewhat resignation to fate in the architecture of society’s reconstruction.

Recently, politicians across Bauchi state and beyond accompanied Rt. Honourable Yakubu Dogara the member representing Dass, Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro federal constituency of Bauchi state who also double’s as the speaker house of representatives, federal republic of Nigeria to crisscross his constituency, in a bid to commission constituency projects which include hospitals equipped with drugs and vaccines, road constructions, rehabilitations and the provision of culverts and half bridges, constructions and rehabilitations of block of classrooms with modern learning and teaching materials as well as the provision of E-library with the state of the art equipment one in each of the three local governments areas that he represents.

In the political calculations of Bauchi State Dass, Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro are highly respected. Late Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa the first prime minster of the federal republic of Nigeria, late Baba Zagi Dass of the defunct Action group and later unity party of Nigeria UPN and the Great Baba Gonto of the defunct NCNC and later Nigeria people’s party NPP have made the Area today a political hot bed of not only Bauchi state but Nigeria as a whole. No wonder then that the emergence of a political icon like Rt Honourable Barrister Yakubu Dogora was not a surprise.

Leader’s like Yakubu Dogara are born, not made though some people argue this position yet, we are supposed to have been educated in a school system which teaches us the values of knowledge, conviction and willpower as instrument to shatter barriers and erect structures and institutions that will recognise society towards a better order, ironically, the geography of the way good things happen is akin to the proverbial manner a thief plies his trade stealthily without a soul to wisper.

Therefore there is no gain saying that Bauchi state needs men and women of value who seek quality service rather than premodial selfish interest, men and women who believe in the indissolubility, indivisibility and united Bauchi state as Honourable Yakubu Dogara epitomizes.

His track record of honesty, accountability commitment to true democracy remains a sterling quality of statesmanship, his leadership style portrays him as resolute, purposeful, brave and patriotic person who despite political reverse at a point, did not shake his faith in the political scene.

Venice Film Festival Offers Grit, Glamour And George Clooney

VENICE, Italy (AP) - The Venice Film Festival is kicking off the fall cinema season with searing drama, serious glamour and a crop of new movies vying for attention, awards and acclaim.

Thanks to its late-summer time slot, just ahead of rivals in Telluride and Toronto, the world's oldest cinema festival has become a key showcase for films hoping to dominate Hollywood's awards season. In recent years, Venice has been a launch-pad for Oscar winners including "Gravity, "Birdman," ''Spotlight" and "La La Land."

This year's edition opens Wednesday with Alexander Payne's "Downsizing," a science fiction-tinged drama starring Matt Damon as a man who hopes to minimize his problems by shrinking himself.

Workers give the finishing touches prior to the start of a of the 74th annual Venice International Film Festival, in Venice, Italy, Monday, Aug. 28, 2017. The festival runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 9, 2017. (Ettore Ferrari/ANSA via AP)

Other films competing for the festival's top prize, the Golden Lion, include George Clooney-directed heist movie "Suburbicon"; Guillermo del Toro's fantastical "The Shape of Water"; Darren Aronofsky's secrecy-shrouded thriller "Mother!"; and Martin McDonagh's dark comedy "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri."

Here's what to watch for at the 74th Venice Film Festival, which runs to Sept. 9:

GLAMOUR GALORE

Unspooling in one of Italy's most ravishing cities, the festival takes style and celebrity very seriously. Among the stars who will be whisked across the Venice lagoon by boat to walk the Palazzo del Cinema red carpet are Clooney, a festival favorite who has a house on nearby Lake Como.

He'll likely be joined by pal Damon, who stars in both "Suburbicon" and "Downsizing," which also features Kristen Wiig. Jennifer Lawrence is expected for the much-anticipated "Mother!", which also stars Javier Bardem. The Spanish star should also be on hand alongside Penelope Cruz for the drug-lord biopic "Loving Pablo."

An older generation of showbiz royalty will be well represented by stars including Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, Donald Sutherland and Michael Caine. Jane Fonda and Robert Redford star in the late-life romance "Our Souls at Night" and are being given lifetime-achievement awards by the festival.

GLOBAL CRISES

Several films in the lineup tackle the conflicts and divisions convulsing the world.

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei's documentary "Human Flow" travels to 23 countries as it tries to put a human face on the vast migrations unfolding around the world. Paul Schrader, who wrote "Taxi Driver," directs "First Reformed," featuring Ethan Hawke as a minister wrestling with his faith and the specter of environmental catastrophe.

Israel's Samuel Moaz, director of acclaimed war drama "Lebanon," returns with "Foxtrot," another story of conflict and loss. From China, Vivian Qu's "Angels Wear White" centers on sexual assault in a small provincial town.

It hasn't escaped comment that Qu is the only female director among 21 filmmakers in the festival's main competition. Debates about diversity and inclusion in the movie business are a long way from dying down.

THRILLS AND CHILLS

Once considered the preserve of B-movies, thrills have become respectable. The Venice competition brims with films that include elements of sci-fi, action and horror, including "Downsizing," ''The Shape of Water" and "Mother!"

Further jolts and shocks are promised by the Italian organized-crime series "Suburra"; S. Craig Zahler's bloody "Brawl in Cell Block 99," starring Vince Vaughn; and a 3-D version of Michael Jackson's "Thriller," screening alongside a 25th-anniversary documentary about the landmark video.

A CHANGING INDUSTRY

Technology and economics are transforming the film industry, and festivals like Venice are working hard to keep up.

Festival director Alberto Barbera has said he wants the lineup to provide "a perception of the future," rather than "a snapshot of the present or a souvenir selfie of our contemporary cinema."

One big change this year is the festival's first virtual reality competition, featuring 22 films and installations judged by a jury led by director John Landis. Barbera said VR, until recently considered little more than "the latest technological gimmick," looked set to "become one of the most colossal investments" for the cultural industry.

With the way films are funded, made, distributed and watched all in flux, the taste-maker role played by festivals like Venice makes them more powerful than ever.

Schrader, who has been making films since the 1970s, said advances in technology had let him make "First Reformed" twice as fast and at half the cost of a movie made just 10 or 15 years ago.

"That's the upside of the enormous freedom we've been given by technology in popüler film izle," he said. "The downside is thousands of films are getting made now that no one wants to see.

"The festivals are the new gatekeepers," he added. "We need these festival structures to process this tsunami of product."

I have a thirteen yr old female pupil whose right aspect hip "pops" out and in while dancing. She says particularly when she tries to turn out more. What recommendation or strategies can I give her? Sincerely, Tasha

As long as there isn't any ache during the hip ‘pop' - I might suspect a muscular imbalance to how she is creating her turnout. The first logical place to examine is the tightness of her hip flexors, particularly the iliopsoas. Attempt having her spend a while stretching the iliopsoas then see if she feels extra hip freedom and fewer hip popping when she begins dancing. If that's the case - then encourage her to do the standing lunge or the runners lunge in between workouts or when she is waiting to maneuver throughout the floor.

Here is a picture of a sitting and hanging stretch for the hip flexors. You can also do a standing stretch in addition to a runners lunge.

My query is a straightforward one. Is a girl of 32 years too outdated to commence dancing? I'm bodily quite fit and strong. Nevertheless, I know that being fit and able to do an hour workout class isn't the same as being physically fit for dance. The kind of dancing that I'm referring to is modern/contemporary dance. I began taking classes just a few months in the past after I realized that popüler film izle it was dance that I wanted to pursue-I do know, it took me a while. I also discover that whenever I do any sort of dancing, I discover myself drawn to ballet kind actions: I'm at all times on my toes, I'm always doing leaps-even before I ever saw these movements being performed. Are these movements usually found in modern/contemporary dance strategies? Also, does it matter that I look fairly younger? Though I don't assume that me looking younger matters, I do look as if I'm in my early twenties. How much does age matter on this world? And final however not the least, what is an effective stretching training to be able to obtain a great side leg lift? Thanks, and I look forward to listening from you.

Nicole

The straightforward reply to your question about age and dancing is NO - it is never too outdated to start dancing! There's much research that's being carried out on how exercise can reverse the aging process, even if you begin in the latter decades of your life. Dance is a good selection for many as it focuses on constructing strength and flexibility.

How much does age matter is an interesting question. To cite Jack Benny, "Age is strictly a case of mind over matter. When you don't mind, it doesn't matter." I'll admit to usually feeling that more mature dancers are more fascinating to watch. For me athleticism without that special spark or connection is just not as engaging. Mature dancers have more to do with life experience than age in years. What I do know is our bodies in addition to our brains are plastic, meaning there's constant change going on. If dancing brings you happiness and pleasure - then it's doing good things for you!

As far as your query about good stretching workout routines to attain a side leg lift I might focus on stretching the hamstring muscular tissues in the back of the leg from the standing position.

Have a wonderful weekend!
